SPRING INTO SUMMER

at the Mineral Tailgate Sale on June 8th (rain date of June 9th)

In just ONE WEEK we’ll be welcoming everyone to the Spring into Summer NEMA-hosted Mineral Tailgate Sale at the Havey tourmaline Quarry. Vendors and Kid’s Activities will open at 9am and close by 4pm. The sale and activities will be located on Levine Road, Poland, ME 04274. Get a “Road Map” of the sale and activities as you enter the property.

Entry and on-site parking are both free.

Kid’s Activities will include:

Mineral Specimens for Kids
Examples of free specimens that will be given to kids.

  • A free mineral for each kid (thank you to Village Silversmith, Steve Foden, and Gordon Jackson for the specimens)

  • Washing pools to search for minerals from the Havey Quarry tailings

  • See rocks that glow in the dark in the UV tent’s updated displays

  • Pick out a free geode and have our volunteer crack it open to see what’s inside (thank you to Steve Foden for the geodes)

  • Look at micro minerals through an electron microscope

  • Meet with the staff/volunteers in the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum

    tent to touch the Moon and Mars rocks (snap a selfie and  post it on our page) and learn more about the amazing things they have in the Museum in Bethel

  • Learn the *many* minerals that are used in each and every cell phone

  • Find out about joining a Kid’s Group at a local mineral club

  • ID Maine Minerals Challenge to win a prize

  • Close encounters with fossils

  • Answers to questions from prior tailgates

  • Non-collecting walking tours of the Havey Quarry on the hour, 9a -3p

  • Mineral displays

  • Shop at the vendor’s booths

For all in attendance:

Visit all the vendors, have a meal at the cafe (hot dogs, chips, sodas, water), talk rocks (for certain), and on the hour between 10am and 3pm you can take a non-collecting (easy) walking tour of the Havey Quarry (walk to the “MEET HERE” sign on the left of the cul-de-sac at the end of Levine).
